We are currently looking to recruit new trainees for a 12 month traineeship on our Tallship Derwent Hunter. The traineeship is a Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain) with a focus on traditional sailing, maritime cultural heritage, ecotourism and environmental management.
It's a hand's-on experience on board a legendary tall ship that provides advanced eco-accredited tours, First Nations maritime cultural experiences, full day reef adventures, half day sailing tours and sunset cruises. The job includes all aspects of ship life including sailing, maintenance, passenger safety, tour operations and environmental management. Sometimes you get to live aboard and sail. This position is based on our Tallship Derwent Hunter in Airlie Beach. The ship operates from the Coral Sea Marina and sails out to the Islands and bays in the region. The ship also travels throughout Queensland from time to time on voyages and expeditions from Brisbane to the Torres Strait.
Tallship Derwent Hunter is a 90ft topsail schooner with five cabins and is 75 years young. She is capable of offshore voyaging and takes up to 60 passengers in the partially smooth waters of Airlie Beach and up to 21 passengers in offshore waters. Built in 1946 in Tasmania she has had a legendary life in research, film, tourism and even gun smuggling.
These positions are only available to Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian South Sea Islander people. Previous experience in saltwater, boating, sailing, tourism or hospitality would be a major plus but not essential to put your name forward.
